A career soldier, he gave most of his years to the military before serving twice Nigeria’s head of state, first as a military ruler from 13 February 1976 to 1 October 1979, and then was elected president from 29 May 1999 – 29 May 2007.

His thoughts on the current administration led by President Muhammadu Buhari has been quite favorable, although he has also criticized from time to time. Here are the things he has said:

1. When he was speaking on Buhari’s capabilities

While Obasanjo was speaking on Monday, August 22, at the third International Conference on African Development Issues — themed: “Driving inclusive and sustainable development in Africa: Models, methods and policies” — organised by Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State.

Someone asked him; “Is there any hope for Nigeria under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari?” The quote above is part of what he said. he also said: “But if you read my book, what I said about him is correct. He is not a hot person when it comes to economy.

He is not a very hot person when it comes to foreign affairs. But he will do well in matters of military and he will do well in fighting Boko Haram.

2. When he spoke about the Buhari led government

About seven months ago, during his remarks at the inaugural conference of Ibadan School of Government and Public Policy (ISGPP), Ibadan in Oyo State, Olusegun Obasanjo voiced his fears about the current administrations abilities.

He also said; “The problem today is that it is doubtful if the current administrative system is imbued with right mix of skills and values to successfully implement a well-articulated programme of change.”

3. When he denied bring Buhari to power

In Jalingo, Taraba state capital, on Tuesday, August 23, when he paid a courtesy visit to Governor Darius Ishaku, Olusegun Obasanjo denied being responsible for Buhari being in power, saying;

“I was astounded by media reports quoting me to have said that I and a few other persons brought President Buhari to power to save Nigeria. I never said that because it is not true. Nigerians voted overwhelmingly for the president and we are all witnesses to that fact. No single person or group can claim that glory.”

4. When he spoke on Buhari’s military prowess

While Obasanjo was speaking on Monday, August 22, at the third International Conference on African Development Issues — themed; “Driving inclusive and sustainable development in Africa: Models, methods and policies” — organised by Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, he also made the above statement.

5. When he was speaking on Buhari before the election

When he was asked about Buhari before the election. He said; “The circumstances [Buhari] will be working under if he wins the election are different from the one he worked under before, where he was both the executive and the legislature – he knows that.


It’s a question of leadership – political and military. He’s smart enough. He’s educated enough. He’s experienced enough. Why shouldn’t I support him?”

Olusaegun Obasanjo who is now a Godfather to many prominent politiciams, revealed that he spent most of his life trying to better the lot of humanity generally and Nigeria specifically.
